June 15, 2004'When will then be now?" "Soon..."I haven't posted in a while, I've went out a bunch, had a good time, and kinda tired of posting shots of random bars with the people I'm with. Yeah they'll be up sooner or later, just not now. But for anyone misses the sound of my voice (I know you imagine me saying everything that I type, don't pretend like you don't), here are my thoughts on r&b: (if you're too lazy/not interested enough to read my thoughts on r&b and my disclaimer about the lists and wanna go straight to the lists click here ) First, I think r&b as a genre isn't all that great. Don't get me wrong, I love it, it's easily my favorite. But, there are only so many different ways you can hear about how much someone loves/used to love/misses/needs/wants/wants but can't have/needs to want and miss the love that one can or cannot have.... I think you get it. But again, I do love it, all of it. The Good (Boyz II Men's first 2 albums, Dru Hill's 2nd album, etc), the Bad (4 pm, After 7, Dru Hill's 3rd Album), and the Ugly (Boyz II Men's last album, only those closest to me know how painful that is for me to say, but I still love it.) I just have a soft spot for it; the sappier and naive the song, the more I feel/relate to it. Because it's hard for artists in this genre to find new ways to say the same things over and over again, r&b comes and goes in waves. A few good songs come out, people forgot how good it can be, then a flood of musicians come out with their version of the events, everyone gets sick of hearing the same thing, r&b goes away... kinda like a sports season. Early 90's were dominated by the Bulls, Boyz II Men and Jodeci, while Brian McKnight was red-shirted. off-season Mid 90's- Boyz II Men started the season strong with II, one of the best r&b albums ever. Unable to keep up the pace they started, they fell behind, like the Bulls without Jordan. At this point however, r&b was still in the Popular section of Tower Records; so after Janet Jackson's "Janet" passed, with well-deserved praise, in came a flood of 1-3 hit wonders. SWV, H Town, Tevin Campbell, Blackstreet (1st album, before they changed half the group and collabed with Dre), AZ Yet, Tyrese, Soul 4 Real (The so- called "next Jackson 5"), and many, many others. Brian McKnight worked out in the off-season and came out with One Last Cry, Never Felt this Way, and a collab with Vanessa Williams- Love Is. All great songs, and if anything showed his potential... Kinda like Ben Wallace's highlights from... what? like 5 different colleges?, Italy, the Wizards, and the Magic. off-season Late 90's- Unlike the Bulls, Boyz II Men never return to championship form. However, Brian McKnight is all grown up and releases Anytime. Like Ben Wallace, people have no idea where he came from and that he's been playing for a while. A bunch of hits came from that album and he continued that success for quite some time (note: with all teenie boppers comin out at 16, I credit him for not giving up by his late 20's). Donnell Jones, Eric Benet, Maxwell, D' Angelo, and R. Kelly (who actually has been a significant part of the whole scene since the early 90's, but then he pulled mistook a underage girl for a urinal and lost quite a few of his listeners, including yours truly... turns out there is something wrong "with a little bump & grind") All helped to make this probably the best time for r&b. Another point, I think most people can only really feel r&b when they are able to relate with their own situation. So, if you ask someone for their favorite love/r&b song, it will most likely be somewhere in their 6th grade to 12th grade time period, since that's when many of us go through our first relationships/break-ups. Not a solid rule, but a pretty good guideline. This is also the disclaimer for my lists, which are pretty much from that time in my life. Nevertheless, I find these to be the top r&b songs from early 90's to now. The first list is well-known songs, the second is lesser-known songs, and the third is the corniest. Sorry, couldn't cut it down to just 10 and sorry I had to use the word corny.

Song-Artist-Album Don't agree with me? Think there's a song I forgot on any of these lists? Well, let's hear it. I'm always down to remenice about old, bad (and when I say bad I mean good) r&b. Posted by Mark at June 15, 2004 06:14 AMComments
6,8,12 by Brian McKnight. Anything by Alicia Keys. You should try listening to her last CD again, Mark. Listen to it with an open mind and it'll grow on you. I swear! But it'll grow on you for real, not like the Enrique CD's you kept from me for months and used as coasters. ;p Posted by: Andrea at June 15, 2004 10:33 AMI have to agree with Andrea , even though I have no clue who you are... Alicia Keyes, Come on Mark! Every song on the First and second Album are Incredible. Nobody knows it..."Look at them, they all want to kill themselves!" :) It is my Favorite by far!!!Oohhh, I just thought of one. All My life- KC & JOJO I totally jammed to that back in the day! Posted by: Jess at June 15, 2004 11:42 AMThis response is so long because Alicia Keys has one of the brightest futures of any r&b vocalist out there, and my reasoning should fully cover the topic: Here's the deal with Alicia, I loved her first CD, had a bunch of great songs. More importantly, she was involved with every aspect of recording her first album, which in this day and age is beyond impressive (I mean, look at what happened to Boyz II Men when they left Babyface). However, none of her radio hits had enough staying power. Before you jump down my throat, here me out. The other songs on the "Well-known" list, were on the charts for months, and no one got sick of them, until the end of their run. Fallin', as much as I wanted to put it on the first list, got played out.. fast. Yes, it stayed on the charts for a long time, but honestly, a balled with 2 versus and a lot of chorus is barely more than an interlude now adays. To me, if a song can play out fast, it's just not up to that level yet. Alicia has some serious talent, but she has yet to reach her potential. Love Is, One Last Cry, and Never Felt This Way (yes, alicia remade it into a interlude, and the original is better) are amazing songs by Brian McKnight. But, they ddin't show what he is fully capable of, which is why they only got honorable mention earlier. Fact is, as good as Alicia's first album was, her "unknown" songs (Goodbye, Butterflies, Why Do I Feel So Sad) are amazing compared against other unknowns. But, her well-known stuff, though very good, in my opinion, doesn't quite match the others on the list. The test is time, Fallin', How Come You Don't Call Me, and A Woman's Worth are all quite old now, and even though I haven't heard them in a while, when they come on, I do think they are good songs, but a part of me still feels like they're still played out from when they were big. Again, I think she's incredible, but more for her potential and her knowledge of music production. To me she hasn't yet put out a song that goes on the top list, but many that could go on the best of the unkowns (Goodbye was very close to making the second list). As for her second CD, it's okay. But, it is a step down from her first CD. I'll quote a huge Alicia Keys fan here, "The best thing about it is that it leaves a lot of room for growth for her 3rd LP." Ummm, there's always room for growth, in fact, if someone put out an album exactly the same as their past album, they'd be ripped apart by critics. While her first album was a great mix of r&b, with a strong call back to Jazz and Blues, which I think was it's strongest point. Her second album felt much more contrived; I think she was trying too hard to be what the media and the public made her out to be. Anyone who thinks that her second CD is better than her first is kidding themselves. And I know for a fact that both of you have agreed with me on this point before. Honestly, I hope her 3rd album yields something that belongs on the top list; she's one of my favorite female vocalists. (I know the two of you well. I know that whether you agree with me or not, you want to argue about it just to argue. I know, because you got it from me:) I'm not gonna stop you, just wanted that out in the open.) Posted by: Mark at June 15, 2004 06:16 PMJess, All My Life does belong on the corny list. Also, I Care 'Bout You by Milestone totally should go on there. I will replace I'm Ready by Tevin Campbell and Sukiyaki by 4pm, which is corny and unkown and belongs on it's own list. Posted by: Mark at June 15, 2004 06:16 PMAndrea, I did want to put 6,8,12 on there, I really did. But, it came out right after Back at One. Sorry, but having 2 songs on one CD that revolve around counting in the chorus is already too much, releasing them one after another was retarded. I love 6,8,12; it's one of my favorites of his, and if I was making a top 10 of Brian McKnight, it would totally be on there. I'm also a big fan of Eric Benet, but I think Poetry Girl and Come as You Are are a level above Spend My Life with You. Since he isn't that well known, he can only make the second list. Compared to the other Eric Benet songs and the rest of the songs on that list, I think Spend My Life with You sounds like too generic. As for Aaliyah, you know my thoughts on her. I think she had a couple good singles, but overall, I didn't find her to be that talented. I mean, she's no Alicia Keys. Her early death was sad for many reasons obviously, but as a musician, it was her potential that was the biggest loss. Totally sounds like I'm rejeccting you're suggestions, which I kinda am:) You know I love you:) What it comes down to is that, while I do like all of the songs you suggested (they're all on my r&b playlist in iTunes), I don't see them as better than the songs on the current list. I think both of you are misunderstanding me. If you think a few songs are left out, then say which songs should be cut to make room. Andrea, I don't know if you realized it, but between the email and your comment, you suggested 10 songs, so your list would look like this: You didn't mention any specific song from Alicia Keys, so I'm sure you'll want to cut some of these to put her on it. But, as of right now, this is the list you've made. Posted by: Mark at June 15, 2004 06:30 PMI don't even know where to begin so... I'll email you. Oh yeah and YOU'RE A LOSER! Posted by: Andrea at June 16, 2004 08:51 PMWhile that's probably true for many reasons, I'm not the one that thinks I Turn to You- All 4 one is one of the top 10 r&b songs ever. Oh yeah, covering up your love for me with anger... although it's nothin new, it's just sad to see sometimes.. Love you!! Posted by: Mark at June 16, 2004 09:03 PMI DID NOT SAY IT WAS A TOP R&B SONG!!! I SAID IT WAS PRETTY! YOU COCKY BASTARD!!! Posted by: Andrea at June 16, 2004 09:12 PMI'm glad that even though I'm on the other side of the planet, I can still get that latin anger out of you. If I can get to you like that, just shows me how much I mean to you:) Between your comments and your email I just read, I honestly can't stop laughing. I keep thinking about when I was driving you home that one time and you almost went latin crazy... ah, the good old days, I know you miss me not being there to antagonize you in person. The email was full of latin anger too. I was gonna post it cause I though it was so funny, but I didn't want you gettin offended. By the way, I asked for songs that should have made the lists, not any song you felt like mentioning, which is why I assumed you were saying that those songs were top songs. I'll see what I can do about getin a spanish version of my posts put up, maybe it's a language thing. Don't hate! Posted by: Mark at June 16, 2004 09:26 PMI can't say what I really want to say to you Mark, but I'll tell you this: I am ussually not the crazy Latina. You're just likely to drive any woman crazy. And I can't wait for all the antagony I'll be getting in person when you get back. It'll be just like the good ol days. Times 10! So keep laughing, I'll have a years worth of live craziness to throw your way. Posted by: Andrea at June 16, 2004 09:35 PMI can't wait. But until then... (I really, really tried not to to this, I'm sorry, I have a problem, I can't stop myself from giving you a hard time, I'm sorry) Okay, Do you KNOW how many typos are on YOUR website? Do you? (pendejomariconmalparidodemierdacono) Posted by: Andrea at June 16, 2004 09:46 PMyeah, but... it's my site, and I don't work for a newspaper, I just thought spelling and grammar would be reactionary. By the way I don't know what that thing at the end means, but I'm sure the feeling is mutual:) Posted by: Mark at June 16, 2004 09:52 PMI write obituaries Mark. For The Record. Stop picking on me, don't you think my job makes me miserable enough as it is? And who cares if it's your site? You still suck. Posted by: Andrea at June 16, 2004 09:58 PMI'm sorry, I do suck. I got nuthin but love for you Andrea. Posted by: Mark at June 16, 2004 10:03 PMThat's it? You're going to let me have the last word? Awww! I knew I loved you for a reason. Please, don't make me regret saying that. Posted by: Andrea at June 16, 2004 10:05 PMwow, Mark, that really long word she typed there is a bad name to be called man. Get Span/Eng dictionary. I cant believe the only mention of Jodeci or K-Ci and Jojo is "All My Life" (I agree its corny), but they were right there with Boyz II Men, come on, think about ALL THEIR songs. You gotta give em their respect. and Tevin Campbell wasnt a 1-3 hit wonder I dont think, he was around for a bunch of years as a kid, and did have a few hits. Its just that we listened to him towards the end of his popularity ( which was like 18 yeras old for him). Be Safe in the land of the Thai- Posted by: Angel at June 16, 2004 10:09 PMI don't think Tevin had any hits as a kid though, I think he was a child star kind of thing, where everyone had really high hopes. I mean hey, I love Tevin Campbell as much as the next straight guy, but I can't say he had more than 3 "hits." Can We Talk, I'm Ready, and Always in my Heart were pretty much it for him. I know you love K-Ci and Jojo man, and I respect that, but besides a few songs like How Could You, All My Life (which is totally corny and on the list), and Tell Me it's Real, I didn't think much of the rest of their stuff. Don't Rush, Last Night's Letter, and Crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy for you baby just didn't do it for me. I think they were much better with Jodeci than on their own. I think Jodeci was right there with Boyz II Men, and I wrote that up there somewhere, but they took a step down when they broke off. Just my opinion man... I know you got a lot of love for them. Thanks for the heads up about the crazy spanish girl. Andrea, I'm not talking to you until you give me an apology that I believe. Posted by: Mark at June 17, 2004 03:20 PMah... I see, well...No. Posted by: Andrea at June 17, 2004 08:53 PMAll I know is, the best part of any R&B song in my opinion is when someone goes "Uh baby baby" in All My Life. Ya'll know what I'm talking about. Like when one of them goes "ALLLLlllll my life" then a big "UH BABY BABY" and then "I pray fo someone likeoyuuuuu." Yeah, thats good stuff. Posted by: Bone at June 17, 2004 11:56 PMKen, you've completely let me down. I was sure that if anyone was gonna stick up for H-Town- Knockin' Da Boots, it woulda been you. I have no idea how to type the sound of the beat from that song that you mimic oh so well, but I guess it's a "moo point" now. Posted by: Mark at June 18, 2004 03:29 AMI am ashamed. How could I have forgotten the classic, passionate, romantic, "weeeeeeeooooorrnggggg, a gimme some good luv", somebody knockin the boots by the boys of H-Town. Im sorry I let you down Marky. That would clearly be my vote for best overall R&B song ever. Good lovin body rockin knockin boots alll night ... weeeeeeeooooorrnggggg ... makin love until we're tired to the break a dawwn BUT AHHHHHHHH COME ON (ahh!) Posted by: Bone at June 18, 2004 03:38 AMIm fuckin cryin right now. Bone-Diddy just cracked my shit up with that.....thats some good stuff. Reminds me of that retarded kid who did She Bangs on American Idol. Im laughin very hard right now. Posted by: ANGEL at June 18, 2004 05:32 AM |
