just another sad love song

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but humor is a very big part of Thai culture. Everywhere I go, I always end up talking to someone (taxi driver, store clerk, or some random person) and it never fails that a joke is made. Of course it may not be a good joke; especially if it’s a girl, cause generally girls aren’t that funny. Yes, they’re funny in that catty/bitchy kinda a way, but not crackin’ jokes to pass the time funny. Guys can make fun of each other and themselves for hours (as long as there’s enough beer and sports/porn to keep it masculine). Whatever, this isn’t the point, and I’m not trying to start any fights. I don’t meet many funny girls, yes I meet fun girls, but not many that make me laugh like I make people laugh. Except maybe Jess… yes, Andrea, I do laugh a lot when I’m with you, but mostly cause I’m making fun of you… and I’m very funny… so much for not starting fights…

ANYWAYS, as I was saying, humor is very important here, even when I go to concerts or anywhere a live band is playing, they don’t just play. They’ll play a song, tell a few jokes, play a song, make fun of themselves, play a song, make fun of a song… you get the idea.

Now, on to my very unimportant point. With all this humor everywhere, I don’t understand why every song is about some sort of heartache. I’m not exaggerating. I have asked for the meaning of every Thai song that I hear on the radio or anywhere. My last post about r&b talked about how the topic was limiting. But at least there’s happy r&b, every song here is a sad love song, even if it sounds happy. Tik, the dancer I was seeing for a while, put on a techno song she liked, I asked what it was about…broken promises and letting your girl down. It’s very odd, it’s as if everyone is joking and laughing so much that they use sad music to balance it out.

Just an observation…

Mark...I...I luv you man. What else can I say? You take easy shots at me. It's part of your charm. BTW, why did you never introduce me to Thai iced tea? Oh, email me the response, I guess.
