"Nobody cares about the Dakotas!"- Monica
I just found out today that, during local election time here, bars, along with other places of that nature, are not allowed to serve alcohol. The reasoning is simple enough; they don't want drunks voting. But I can't recall ever hearing this idea before, and I'm curious about what that says about their culture and mine. Although the reasoning is easy enough to see, the thought process is much more difficult. My first thought was that we don't care enough at home and here they do. But then I thought, what if it's that the local government knows how much people drink, and would like them to be sober for just this weekend, then they can go back to the bottle. And my last thought is that if there is anything I like as little as geography, it's politics and history. Which means this could have been an issue at one time, but I didn't care enough to know. In my mind, it was just as important as where the Dakotas are. Being that I'm not a big drinker unless the occasion calls for it, situations when I'm not allowed to drink don't really stand out in my mind; except for when my mom tells me not to drink, nothing makes me want to drink more than that (HINT). In fact, I, along with many others, have used voting as one of the main reasons for a younger drinking age (18); the other being the ability to go to war. This is where I would normally come to my point, and then end with a witty, sometimes humorous anecdote. But alas, I have no point; this was just a thought.
